Martin Luther King Day, Clothing Giveaway, January 16, 2012
Hundreds of people gathered in the New Opportunities auditorium on Martin Luther King Day, for a clothing giveaway sponsered by New Opportunities Inc. and Acts 4 Ministries. Below, volunteer Nianci, a student at Cheshire Academy, shares her reflections as a volunteer at the event.
“What sizes are you looking for?” “How do you like this one?”
These were what I had said
for a hundred times on MLK Day, at an annual Clothing Give-away, in Waterbury. It was my first time to get involve in such a great volunteering opportunity and I enjoyed it very much. There laid around dozens of boxes containing different clothes from baby’s to elder’s, women’s to men’s, which were all donated by caring people. I picked a round table giving out girl’s clothes and was in charge of it the whole time. Picking clothes for others, folding clothes to put back, arranging them in order, the first time I felt like being a staff at the mall. Although neither did I go shopping very often nor know any conversion of standard sizing system, I found myself quite lucky and surprised to have a sense of what a 6 year old looks like and pick a perfect clothes for her. In spite of standing for 4 hours and having no rest, I felt more than accomplished and happy to help around a hundred people, who might even be more tired than I did for waiting in a long line. I love to see people’s smiling faces and to hear just a simple “thank you”. For a volunteer, I believe there is nothing more rewarding than to see others happiness and satisfactory. Help can be simple and easy; if we care about and pay attention to people in need, we will find tons of ways to give love around us.
